Background

With the rapid upgrading of the new materials industry, ultra-high molecular weight polyolefins and polyolefin elastomers are becoming key areas of focus in China's coal chemical and petrochemical new materials sectors. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE or UPE) is primarily used in lithium battery separators and fibers, while ultra-high molecular weight polypropylene (UHMWPP or UPP) is one of the high-end thermoplastic engineering plastics with enormous potential in high-end applications.

By the end of 2025, the total domestic UPE production capacity is expected to reach approximately 700,000 tons per year. In the past year, several domestic UPE projects have commenced production or made significant progress. For example, Yulong Petrochemical's 100,000 tons/year plant started operation; China Chemical's Yulin 50,000 tons/year project entered trial production and commissioning; Shaanxi Coal Pujiang Energy Chemical's first large-scale coal-based 40,000 tons/year industrial plant commenced operation; ExxonMobil, Shandong Jincheng Petrochemical, and the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have also made progress in the research and industrialization of UPP.

Polyethylene elastomers represented by E-POE and H-POE, which do not rely on α-olefins and metallocene catalysts and are produced using ethylene as the sole raw material, have attracted widespread attention in the industry. In addition, in December 2024, the first domestic polypropylene-based elastomer (PBE) pilot plant built by Sinopec Beijing Research Institute of Chemical Industry was successfully put into operation, breaking the technological monopoly of international giants.

With the expansion of ethylene and propylene production capacity and abundant raw materialsupply, the market prospects for UPE, UPP, POE, and PBE are promising, and related technology and equipment manufacturers will have excellent development opportunities.
