ASIACHEM Consulting Launches China Green Methanol Industry Chain In-depth Research Report

2024-10-11

ASIACHEM Consulting is a leading consulting company in the "Scenic Biomass-Hydrogen-Ammonia-Methanol-SAF" industry chain. We have conducted in-depth research on the technology, cost, capacity, market demand and profitability of green methanol, green ammonia and SAF.

Methanol is both a clean energy source and an important chemical raw material, which is the core of the "methanol economy" concept. The energy and chemical industry chain using methanol as raw material is basically mature, and has the conditions for large-scale popularization and application. Under the background of carbon neutralization, "green methanol" is attracting the attention of scientific research institutions, enterprises and capital market.

According to the data of "China Green Methanol Industry Chain Annual Report 2024" by ASIACHEM Consulting, the green methanol projects currently being promoted in China mainly adopt the following process options:

Option 1: Completely using synthesis gas from biomass gasification as the methanol feedstock, configuring the conversion unit to adjust the hydrogen-carbon ratio, and not coupling green hydrogen. Supporting air separation is required.

Option 2: biomass gasification as raw material, coupled with wind/PV electrolysis water green hydrogen, the abolition of the conversion unit, to achieve the full use of bio-CO. At the same time, use the methanol synthesis catalyst adapted to high CO2 content, and the CO2 not involved in the reaction is discharged. Although the electrolysis of water to provide a large number of green oxygen, but in order to ensure the stable operation of the gasifier, to be on the safe side, or should consider supporting small-scale air separation.

Option 3: Synthesize methanol with CO2 by-produced during biomass utilization (by-production from biomass power generation, biomass gasification, alcohol fermentation process, etc.) and green hydrogen.

Biomethane from biomass fermentation or biosynthesis gas from biomass gasification can produce bio-based green methanol. As the industry chain of electrolysis of water to produce green hydrogen becomes mature, supplementing green hydrogen into biobased syngas can make full use of the biobased carbon source in it and increase the production of green methanol. Biomass gasification technology, as well as a large-scale and stable supply of biomass feedstock, is the key to the project's success.

The production of green methanol from green hydrogen and CO2 is moving from industrial demonstration to large-scale commercialization. The main means of producing green hydrogen is hydrogen production by electrolysis of water from renewable energy sources, with electricity cost accounting for about 80% of the cost of hydrogen production. Wind power and photovoltaic as the representative of the "green power" is expected to become the main source of electricity by 2050, when the cost of green power is less than 0.15 yuan / kWh, the production of green hydrogen will be very cost advantageous. CO2 capture, enrichment and transportation technology has been realized in industrial applications, how to reduce the cost and energy consumption is the key.

As a leading research organization in the emerging field of energy and chemical industry, ASIACHEM Consulting has launched "Global and China Green Methanol Project Database (Monthly Update)" and "China Green Methanol Industry Chain Annual Report 2024".

Sustainable fuels mainly include green methanol, green ammonia, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), biodiesel and power to liquids. Green methanol and green ammonia are considered to be the most promising fuels for decarbonizing shipping, while SAF is the key to achieving net-zero carbon emissions from the global aviation transportation industry by 2050.

ASIACHEM's sustainable fuel reports also include: China Green Ammonia Industry Chain Annual Report, China Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Technology and Project Annual Report, and the upcoming China Biomass Gasification Technology and Project Annual Report and China Power to X Technology and Project Annual Report.
