Under the background of carbon neutrality, the demand for EVA photovoltaic materials has grown rapidly, driving the demand for high-quality VAM feedstocks. Vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) is mainly used to produce polyvinyl alcohol, EVA resin, polyvinyl acetate, VAE emulsion, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer, acrylic fiber, etc. In 2022, China's apparent consumption of VAM will increase by approximately 14% year-on-year.
As of the end of 2022, there are 10 major vinyl acetate producers in China, with the acetylene process taking the dominant position. Sinopec Sichuan Vinylon, Inner Mongolia Mengwei, and Sinopec Great Wall Energy all have production capacities of more than 400 Kt/a. The acetylene process base VAM requires technological innovation to compete with the ethylene-based process in terms of both cost and quality.
China's ethylene-based vinyl acetate will expand rapidly in the next few years, with a planned production capacity of nearly 1.1 Mt/a under construction from 2023 to 2024. Most of the new VAM projects use the ethylene process, such as Shenghong, Levima, Zhejiang Petrochemical, KingBoard, Yankuang, etc. Most of the newly built capacity is equipped with downstream EVA and other units.
AsiaChem Consulting believes that with the rise of the EVA market, the raw material structure and product market structure of vinyl acetate will undergo major changes in the next few years. Upstream and downstream enterprises in the vinyl acetate and EVA industry chains will usher in new market opportunities.
VAM & EVA Industrial Chain Forum 2023 will be held in Shanghai on Dec. 13. The conference will discuss issues such as EVA, vinyl acetate and upstream and downstream technologies, supply and demand, new projects, industrial development and market opportunities under the background of carbon neutrality.
