ASIACHEM Businesses
8th Coal to MEG Conference 2017

Background

Coal to MEG (CTMEG) has become an important part of China’s MEG capacity. According to ASIACHEM’s data, by the end of 2016, China has commissioned the MEG capacity of 7.77Mt/a, including 2.12Mt/a of CTMEG capacity. In 2016, China’s CTMEG production was about 1Mt, accounting for 20% of total output of MEG. China is the largest PET producer in the world. It is anticipated that China’s effective capacity of PET in 2016 is 48Mt/a, the PET production will be 36Mt, and the MEG demand will be 13Mt.

China still needs to import large amount of MEG, which brings a good development opportunity for CTMEG. The operation of commissioned CTMEG demo projects is gradually entering blissful circumstances, and some of units achieved high loading and stable operation, driving the continuous growth of investment for CTMEG new projects. ASIACHEM’s statistics show that, China’s new CTMEG capacity will be 2.98Mt/a in 2017-2018, accounting for 64% of MEG new capacity.

The technological R& D of CTMEG via oxalate route is developing toward the directions of low cost, high selectivity, long catalyst life, and environment-friendly. Meanwhile, the novel syngas to PET grade MEG through methanol technology collaborated by Eastman Chemical and JM Davy has also been successfully developed. With the continuous optimization of product quality and deepening understanding of CTMEG application by downstream users, CTMEG has started the large-scale application in PET industry.

8th Coal to MEG Conference will be held on April 27-28, 2017 in Haikou, Hainan, China. The conference will focus on CTMEG competitiveness & investment opportunity under low oil price, operation optimization & technical innovation of CTMEG commercial plant, coal based MEG application experience in PET industry, progress of novel CTMEG technologies, industry influence of MEG futures market, etc.
