ASIACHEM recently published “China Green Ammonia Industry Chain 2026 Annual Report” and “China Green Ammonia Project Database”. Ammonia is one of the world most widely produced & applied chemicals, with around 180Mt/a market size, 2Mt/a ocean shipping trade, and quite completed applicable storage/transport regulations, standards and infrastructures. Green ammonia, synthesized by green H2 and N2 gas at the presence of a catalyst, is an extremely promising hydrogen energy developing direction. At one hand, green ammonia can be used as the green hydrogen carrier to cope with the hydrogen storage/transport difficulties; on the other hand, green ammonia can also be used as the fuel for internal combustion engine, gas turbine or boiler etc. Chinese & foreign enterprises and research institutes are promptly exploring the use of ammonia as high temp furnace fuel, ammonia blended coal firing power generation, ammonia fueled ships, and ammonia fuel cells etc.
On Jan 30th, Jilin Provincial Energy Administration official website published the province’s “green power direct linking project development & construction implementing plan (trial)” (draft for circulation).
The draft proposed that: the projects with newly added load may proceed with green power direct linking, mainly to support H2-base green energy (green hydrogen, green hydrogen to green ammonia, green hydrogen to green methanol, green hydrogen to sustainable aviation fuel etc.), steel metallurgy, computing power (data) center, and automobile industry etc. Power use projects having not reported to power grid operators (including the expansion of existing load), power use projects having reported but not started the accessory power grid engineering, as well as the existing projects reached agreement through negotiation with the power grid operators, all shall be deemed as newly added loads. In principle, no direct electric connection shall take place between newly added loads (including the expansion of existing loads) and the existing loads.
As a whole project, the new energy-based self-generated for self-use power shall account at least 30% of the project total power use, and the proportion shall be continuously increased. Starting from 2030, the proportion shall be at least 35% for newly added projects. The proportion of new energy-based self-generated for self-use power in the total usable power generation shall not be lower than 60%. In particular, the upper limit proportion of new energy-based grid-accessed power in the total usable power generation of the project proceeding with green power direct linking, shall not exceed 40% for those started up before and by 2028, or not exceed 20% for those started up after 2028; for the existing loads proceeding with green power direct linking, the upper limit proportion of new energy-based grid-accessed power in the total usable power generation shall not exceed 20%.
